Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning or understanding language.

Synonyms: AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science concerned with systems that solve tasks normally requiring human intelligence – for example understanding language, recognising images or making decisions.

Machine learning

Many modern AI systems rely on machine learning: rather than being explicitly programmed, they learn patterns from large amounts of data. Especially powerful are artificial neural networks, loosely modelled on the brain.

Applications

AI now powers search engines, voice assistants, medical diagnostics and much more. As it spreads, so do questions about transparency, fairness and social responsibility.
